What is acne?
It’s a condition that usually affects adolescents although also people in their twenties or thirties might be inflicted with it.
Hair follicles or pores contain, what are called, sebaceous glands that secrete oil. This oil keeps the skin lubricated and healthy looking. The oil is called sebum.
During puberty, when hormonal changes occur, these glands might produce more sebum than is needed. The pores get clogged, bacteria may get trapped in there and multiply. It can cause redness, swelling and irritation. This is the onset of acne.
What are the symptoms of acne?
Acne has various symptoms:
- Whiteheads. These are bumps underneath the skin which make the skin bulge.
- Blackheads. These are clogged pores but they are open and you can see right inside them.
- Pimples. These are also clogged, open pores. But they are just underneath the skin. Usually they are filled with pus.
- Nodules These are deep within the skin and are infected lumps and cysts.
How can we prevent Acne?
- Wash your face at least twice a day. Do not scrub but use a soft face cloth.
- Don’t use hair sprays and gels around your face.
- If your hair is long keep it away from your face so it doesn’t leave oil behind as it touches.
- If you are around grease and/or oil in your workplace wash your face as soon as you get home.
- You can buy over the counter creams and lotions that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
Use them sparingly or they will dry out your skin completely.
