Green-lipped mussels
The green-lipped mussels are native to the clear waters off the coast of New Zealand. The natives of the islands retrieve these mussels. The Maori consider these mollusks to be a delicacy and will eat them on a regular basis.
Retrieving these mussels can be an arduous job of clambering and climbing along the coastal rocks.
The amazing thing though is that tribesmen that are well into their 80s are climbing and clambering with as much agility as their younger fellow tribesmen. It does not appear that any of the octogenarians is afflicted with any sort of artritis.
Eventually this came to the attention of the medical and research community. They marveled at the fact of these elderly people being so nimble. And being doctors and researchers, of course they tried to figure out the reason for this. As they pondered, they got to asking themselves and each other if the diet of the Maoris might have something to do with their agility.
After conducting some studies it came to light that the green-lipped mussels have tremendous medicinal qualities.
The fatty acids in these mussels are highly anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. They prevent the joints from becoming stiff, swollen, red and inflamed. In other words they prevent Arthritis.
If that was the only reason for eating this mussel on a regular basis a lot of people could be positively affected by this. But more and more benefits came to light.
It had already been established that eating fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines etc. was good for a healthy heart, well developed brain and glowing skin. It also would boost the immune system, help people control weight and aid the digestive system.
These mussels, it was discovered, have fatty acids that are more potent than that of ordinary fish. And any oil derived from green-lipped mussels is a superior oil.
